Roofing in Alaska
"Since Alaska is subject to cold temperatures and snow many months of the year, an ideal roof material would be one that is strong and provides additional insulation from the cold temperatures. "
Alaskan homes face extreme cold temperatures, snow and high winds. Most homes located in northern regions tend to be built differently, with shapes that discourage snow accumulation. This can be seen in homes with shallow roof valleys, more rounded roof and sides and a steeper slope that homes found in other regions. Homes found in snow filled climates also tend to be built out of wood logs rather than wood plans or brick, as thick wood logs provide more insulation from the cold temperatures.
Alaskan residents should consider two things when choosing a roof material for their homes. First, is the resistance to weather elements. Secondly, the aesthetic match between the roof style and the style of the home.
Weather Proof Roof
Since Alaska is subject to cold temperatures and snow many months of the year, an ideal roof material would be one that is strong and provides additional insulation from the cold temperatures.
Clay and slate tiles are great for insulation, but are heavier than other roof materials; which would require additional weight supports to protect the roof from collapse when snow accumulates.
Metal roof materials can be a good choice for colder climates as long as the metal panels are strong enough to support the weight of snow build up.
Rubber or composite roof shingles provide great insulation by retaining heat and are lighter weight than tiles. Rubber and asphalt shingles also are available in dark colors, which will help retain heat in winter months.
Matching Styles
Since many northern homes are built out of wood logs, matching the style of the house is important when choosing a roof material. Generally, the color of the roof material is the most important when working with the aesthetic appeal. An green aluminum roof would match nicely with a home that has gray or black accent tones around the home; whereas a copper metal roof would match with a brown log cabin style home.
