Roofing in Colorado
"Since the climate is somewhat unpredictable and can span the extremes of the thermometer natural-based roof materials, such as wood shingles, do not hold up well. "
When you think of Colorado, you think of snowcapped peaks and clean, mountain air. Colorado is one of the fastest growing housing markets in the United States, but this isn’t always the best news for home builders. Colorado homes face unique challenges, ones that are very important when selecting a material for the roof.
What Doesn’t Work
Colorado is no stranger to quick and extreme temperature fluctuations. Due to its location in the mountains and the altitude of most cities, weather changes come quick and fierce. One day it could be sunny and mid 60s and the next drop into near freezing temperatures with high winds.
Since the climate is somewhat unpredictable and can span the extremes of the thermometer natural-based roof materials, such as wood shingles, do not hold up well. Wood shingles cannot withstand the higher UV exposure, the strong winds and abrupt fluctuations in temperatures. These shingles contract and expand with the weather conditions, and like any other structure made of wood, are susceptible to cracking when this happens.
Synthetic roof materials, found in manufactured wood shingles and tiles are also a poor choice for Colorado homes. The chemicals that make up the synthetic materials can dry out under the sun or freeze in the cold weather, causing them to break and chip.
What Works
Many roof contractors in Colorado suggest two types of roof materials for homes. The first is composition asphalt shingles. Not only are these shingles cost friendly, they are adaptable to weather conditions. Asphalt shingles can withstand extreme temperatures, UV exposure better and require less maintenance.
If you are looking for something more unique that traditional composite asphalt shingles, metal roof materials are also a good choice for the Colorado climate. Metal roofs not only produce a unique look, but are made from strong metals such as steel or copper. A metal roof can withstand high winds , the weight of snow and require very little maintenance.
